R2Repro started making reproduction parts on February 1st 2004. Since then we have been working hard on the prototype bike. It's now done and will be thoroughly tested and hope sales will start soon. We never really planned on getting into this business but a while ago I became interested in old bicycles particularity the Penny Farthing or Hi-wheel type. I searched the market for what was available and found what I thought was a fairly priced reproduction model. I was new to this sport or if I may use slang, a "Newbie". Luckily I'm not a "impulse shopper" and took the time to learn all I could about Hi-wheels by reading other peoples opinions and downloaded picture after picture of original old bikes. Naturally I wanted my reproduction bike to look the same. Don't you? Take a look at the photos below. Most bikes come with well built parts (many cast), a front brake, a leather seat on an adjustable spring wire frame or a spring metal bar (sometimes both), a tapered backbone, small air space between the front tire and the front fork head and backbone which gives you a bigger wheel for your leg size (more speed!) and many other important details. When I matched what I have seen and learned to the replica bike I was about to buy for over $1000 usd I decided to pass, in fact I was angry. The other models on the market were just too high priced for me. I could buy a good used car for what they were asking. Being mechanically inclined I said to myself I think I can do a better job and keep the price down for the average buyer as well. I have accomplished both! Most want this bike for weekend sport or recreation riding. A fun nostalgic experience. They want a price they can afford for a quality bike that both looks like an original and requires little, easy maintenance like being able to change a tire by themselves and fix scratches without replating. With the in-expendable advice I was given by both experts in the Hi-wheel field and many experienced Wheelmen I had a direction to follow. It was not easy but the R2 Rudge reproduction bicycle has been born! A very special thank you to all those who helped. |
